Using voice to predict psychosis

At Psyrin, we’re committed to turning cutting-edge science into real-world tools that improve mental health care. In line with this mission, we’re proud to announce CHRONOS, a research study focused on using speech and artificial intelligence to predict the onset of psychosis in young people at clinical high risk.
The study will be conducted in collaboration with a leading early intervention site: The Brookline Center for Community Mental Health. Together, we aim to transform how risk for psychosis is assessed, using scalable, accessible digital tools.
What Is CHRONOS?
CHRONOS (Clinical High Risk Online Novel Assessment of Psychosis Symptoms with AI) is a multi-year, observational study designed to test Psyrin’s speech-based assessment platform in individuals aged 16–35 who are at clinical high risk of developing psychosis. Our goal is to determine whether short speech samples can identify who is most at risk, and who is most likely to transition to psychosis over time.
Participant voice recordings are analyzed by Psyrin’s proprietary AI models, which extract vocal and linguistic markers linked to risk profiles. Participants are then followed every six months to track changes in symptoms and outcomes, creating a rich dataset for both prediction and progression modeling.
Why It Matters
Psychosis can be devastating, especially when diagnosis and treatment come too late. While current gold-standard tools like the Structured Interview for Psychosis-risk Syndromes (SIPS) are effective, they require hours of specialist time, are vulnerable to bias, and offer limited predictive power on who will actually transition.
CHRONOS aims to address these gaps by introducing objective, scalable, and faster assessments that can support clinicians and reduce the burden on care teams. With the right tools, early intervention becomes not just possible, but practical, and potentially life-changing.
A Research Platform for the Future
CHRONOS is more than a study. It’s the foundation for a new generation of AI-powered tools that can help reshape how mental health services screen, triage, and support young people at risk. Psyrin’s approach is rooted in clinical rigor, ethical implementation, and deep collaboration with real-world care providers.
Our hope is that CHRONOS will lay the groundwork for validated, explainable AI that can be embedded directly into care pathways, helping clinicians intervene earlier, with more confidence, and with better outcomes for patients and families.
